The blog

Why set up a blog?

A blog has existed on this site in some form or another since its inception as I’ve always wanted to share something, anything. But previous blogs seemed to lack focus. Hence this blog’s title, and its ‘focus’ on photography.

Why a photography blog?

Photography is largely an artistic endeavor, but it is also highly technical. Whilst technical aspects of photography can be learned with a little patience and interest, marrying the technical aspects with the artistic side is the main challenge. This blog charts my journey in this wide and interesting field.

What will the blog feature?

Apart from posts about my own experiments and experiences in photography, the blog will also link to articles, gear reviews, inspiring images, workshops and contests.

The author

My mugWho are you?

I’m David Tan, resident of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Currently aged 33, happily married and father to a lively 5 year old son. I’ve a degree in Multimedia from the University of Plymouth. My interests include computers, design, Formula 1 and of course, photography.

How long have you been taking photos?

I’ve been taking photos since I was introduced to black and white film whilst in university in 1996. Back then, costs were prohibitive, especially on a student’s budget and the pace of learning much slower. With the advent of digital, all of that has changed. There is no longer a need to develop film and the results of your mistakes are immediately apparent (see: chimping).

What areas of photography are you interested in?

I dabble in many areas of photography. However, my main interest in photography is macro photography. Macros enable us to see everyday items in a whole new way. I’m also interested in casual portraits as well as candids.

What gear do you use?

I use a Nikon D7000 with a Tamron SP AF 17-50mm ƒ/2.8 (A16NII) as my general walkabout lens. I have a Tamron SP 90mm ƒ/2.8 that I use for macros and portraits. Recently added was a Tokina ATX 11-16mm ƒ/2.8 wide angle lens. And of course, the Nikon 50mm ƒ/1.8. For flash work, I use my SB-600 along with a reflector and some homemade snoots. The old Nikon D70s has been relegated to back-up status.
