Gadget lust…
by david on Sep.12, 2008, under Gadgets, Science / Technology
Every so often… I get the urge to spend money needlessly on some gadget or toy. The gadget can be anything from a pedometer to a games console. The toy is just.. a toy.. mostly some action figure that screams out to memories of my toy deprived childhood lurking just beneath the surface of my not so adult mind…
I rarely give in to this sort of ’lust’… however, one gadget has been playing havoc with me. And that is none other than the Nokia E71. I’m sure if you’re reading this, you know all about this phone.. the sucessor to the popular E61i. I even compiled list of reviews…

If you’re a T9 sorta person, then you probably wouldn’t even consider an E71. Or would you? Here’s how the E71 got to me..
Design:
I’ve seen comments on the web that totally hate the phone for its looks. I for one quite like it. Nokia has done an excellent job with the phone. Obviously it used the E51 as a test to see if people would go for that sort of look and once they saw how well received the E51 was, it was only natural to adopt the look for the rest of the upcoming E-series phones.
Pictures of it don’t show how compact it is, it’s only until you’ve held one in your hands that you realise how small it is, but not so small that the QWERTY keypad becomes useless. Yeah, it’s surely a fingerprint magnet.. and I suspect after a few months of use, it’s going to get some scratches on the metal surfaces.. but DAMN.. it’s one good looking phone.
Add-ons:
For a business class phone, it has quite a few features that seem more at home with an N series phone. It has a 3.2 megapixel camera. It can play MP3s and videos. It’s got Wi-fi, 3G and Bluetooth. It has a forward facing camera for video calls. It has built in GPS… I think the list goes on and on. The only thing that’s missing is an accelerometer, which the E66 has.
QWERTY?:
The QWERTY looks like it can be really useful.. but I’m not sure if it will be useful to me. The amount of messaging I do doesn’t seem to make it a logical choice.
Have I bought it?
No.. and Tango will give me grief on this. But no matter how many gizmos it has on it.. I’m not sure if I can justify spending RM1700 on it. Right now, I have two options.. get the E51 to replace my ageing 6100 now.. OR wait a couple of months and get the E71.
At the end of the day.. it’s just another gadget that I’m lusting after..
BUT…
I hope you found the compilation of reviews useful…
If I do make up my mind and finally choose one, I’ll make sure I post an update.
