Movie Review: Ice Age 3

by david on Jul.13, 2009, under Movies, Reviews

Over the weekend, my wife and I took our son to watch Ice Age 3 or Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs… Thought I’d do a quick review of this movie, the third installment of the franchise.

Ice Age 3

Ice Age 3

The plot (you *may* want to skip this bit if you haven’t seen the movie):

All the main characters from the first two movies are back in this third one. Manny is settling down and about to start a family with Ellie. Diego is starting to feel the lack of adventure and the tedium of herd life (as opposed to pack life).  And Sid is just feeling left out. Not to be outdone, he decides to adopt three eggs he finds. Of course, he has no idea what are in the eggs, but he decides to adopt them anyway. It turns out that the eggs are Tyrannosaurus eggs and Mummy Tyrannasaur isn’t too happy about her babies being kidnapped.

“Wait, weren’t dinosaurs extinct by the time the ice age came around?” I hear you ask.

Well, apparently some dinosaurs survived in a huge underground cavern that’s heated by the lava from Earth’s core.. unbelievable as it may be, it makes for an interesting story. Mummy Tyrannosaur comes for her babies and brings Sid along back to the cavern (presumably as a light snack for the babies). The rest of the gang then attempt to save Sid. On the way, the hook up with Buck, an Indiana Jones-type swashbuckling weasel who has spent too much time in the jungles alone.

“What about Scrat?”

Well, he’s on screen more.. he even manages to find a love interest.. a flying squirrel named Scratte… :)

Review:

Overall, I liked this movie… it was entertaining. It didn’t really slow down for me, although I did catch my wife asleep at one point. My son liked it… I could tell by the way he more or less sat in his seat for the whole 1 and a half hours of the show. Although it’s the third movie, the producers decided to introduce the characters again anyway… But the introductions were brief (more like a reminders to jog your memory if you saw the first two). There was a pretty good mix of action and comedy. And Scrat shows up more.. what more can you ask for? BTW, if you saw the movie in Malaysian cinemas, did you notice one part that seemed to be cut/censored? If you did.. drop me a line.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Does my 3 year old like it? YES

I wonder when I will be able to bring the girls for movies. Haven’t seen them being able to sit down for a show for an hour yet :P

I think you’d be surprised… My son sat through Wall-E when he was only 2+… so I think your girls should be able to sit through a movie.. they just need to be interested in it… the novelty of a cinema should keep them glued to the seat long enough.. :)
